So this blog was always meant to be a temporary endeavor. It was a bit of a trial run. An experiment to see if blogging was something I enjoyed. I definitely wasn't ready to commit to anything long term and I was completely unsure of what I wanted to write about. This past summer gave me an opportunity to explore my interests and to find my voice. So while I will no longer be posting anything on this site, I am choosing to leave it up as a time capsule of my last summer at home. It chronicles an important time of transition in my life and I'm proud of the revelations I've made here. That being said, I have started a new chapter, which requires a new creative space. <a href="http://meghanmichellegallagher.com/" target="_blank">MEDIA. ART. ADVENTURE.</a> is a place for me to share little bits of inspiration and to explore my passion for art, media, and all things internet-related. Cheers to growing up and moving on! I can't wait for whatever comes next. </h3>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AZlRfD-GxtU/VEmFw9dk_7I/AAAAAAAAAg0/WYrWziZLIYM/s1600/IMG_3925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AZlRfD-GxtU/VEmFw9dk_7I/AAAAAAAAAg0/WYrWziZLIYM/s1600/IMG_3925.JPG" /></a></div>
It couldn't last forever.<br />
<br />
Summer is over and it is time for me to go back to school to start my senior year of college. It is time to say goodbye to the reckless relaxing spontaneous adventure I've been having for the past three months and to return to the real world. If I'm being completely honest, I'm stoked.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I want to get going already! I want to embark on the next journey. After this school year, I don't know what I'll be doing. I might be starting a job as a project manager for an advertising agency. I might be choosing to go the grad school route and continuing my pursuit of education. I might be looking for gallery or museum jobs, or even cultivating my own love of design and creation. I might be starting a nonprofit or trying to increase female representation in the Hollywood apparatus. Who knows! I might be just as confused as I am now (but hopefully not!) Everything is possibility and opportunity and I am just going to bask in that feeling for as long as possible.<br />
<br />
I've thought a lot this summer about what next year means for me and about what it means to be an adult. I'm not sure I've figured out that grown-up responsible thing just yet. But who's in a hurry? I am sad to be letting go of this blogging adventure. It was always supposed to be temporary, something that would end as my senior year begins. However, I feel like I've really accomplished something here. Between the frivolous food posts and incoherent late-night ramblings, I have started to find my voice. I am beginning to assemble the bits and pieces of my passions into something vaguely resembling a life. I will continue writing and chronicling my adventures at my website as the year continues, trying to make the most of every moment I am given.<br />
<br />
The Last Seattle Summer is coming to an end, but my life is just beginning.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-38997330191217347612014-08-20T14:51:00.000-07:002014-10-14T02:51:26.887-07:00Neat and Tidy (Artist Obsession)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I just need to do a quick post about how freaking cool these photographs by Todd McLellan are. They are part OCD, part I spy game, and part Etsy-worthy whimsy. <br />
<a name='more'></a>I can't stop looking at them and am already planning on getting a print of a disassembled bicycle for my dad for christmas. They prints are delicate and masculine at the same time which is really hard to pull off. Minimalist without being boring. There are a watch, an old Mac computer, and a snowblower. But the <a href="http://toddmclellan.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">entire series</a> is genius.<br />

This was not only a mini vacation but also sort of an accidental vacation. Its was spontaneous and adventurous and lots of fun! My mother was going up to Victoria, BC for a business conference and invited me to come along as her date since I had never been. I packed a bag, hopped on a boat, and had a wonderful couple of days exploring a new city.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I did all the touristy things, saw all the sights, had high tea, ate great Italian food, and hung out in the penthouse of a fancy hotel. Not bad for a last minute adventure!<br />

Cool Idea: using frozen blueberries as ice cubes in sparkling water. It makes drinking water and staying hydrated a little more fun and a little more special. Plus it turns this fantastic magenta pink color that happens to match my nails perfectly.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-45127388584235339652014-08-05T21:14:00.000-07:002014-10-14T02:03:29.404-07:00Pretty Things<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I WANT IT ALL! Well, not really. But I want a lot of things. I am an ambitious girl and I definitely like keeping busy. This laid back summer schedule is starting to really mess with my need for routine. It's been a fun change but I'm getting pumped for school to start back up later this month.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xfxgUIJb1vc/U9iIQIYOUpI/AAAAAAAAAeA/y2vimbaf2cU/s1600/IMG_3366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xfxgUIJb1vc/U9iIQIYOUpI/AAAAAAAAAeA/y2vimbaf2cU/s1600/IMG_3366.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So this summer I've been learning a lot about how to cook in single portions. When it's just you eating, it can be easy to skip the cooking and just have popcorn or ice cream for dinner. But that's not nearly as satisfying or grown up as I'd like to be. Finding that motivation to make something satisfying and moderately healthy has been a huge goal of mine this summer. However, making dinner for a crowd comes with its own set of challenges. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My parents and I had decided to get together for an all-too-rare family dinner. We decided that a big summer salad would be the perfect way to please everyone... And then we got to the grocery store. We couldn't decide on anything! We were all hungry enough that we didn't want to compromise on our meals so we ended up buying literally every salad topping we could think of. Red and white onions because my mother doesn't like the red kind, two kinds of cheeses, and both bacon and crab because of course. We even got two different kinds of lettuce to serve as the base of our salads. We felt totally ridiculous but I can honestly say it was worth it to have tons of options and to really be able to customize. Plus, it created quite an impressive spread.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HInOsj3B7-M/U9iIPUNGR8I/AAAAAAAAAd4/oe-VUYd8paU/s1600/IMG_3361.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HInOsj3B7-M/U9iIPUNGR8I/AAAAAAAAAd4/oe-VUYd8paU/s1600/IMG_3361.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here we've got:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Spinach </li>
<li>Baby arugula</li>
<li>Walnuts </li>
<li>Cherry tomatos </li>
<li>Radishes</li>
<li>Red onions</li>
<li>White onions</li>
<li>Feta cheese</li>
<li>Two different varieties of green olives</li>
<li>Avocados</li>
<li>Blue cheese</li>
<li>Rasberries</li>
<li>King crab meat</li>
<li>Bacon</li>
<li>Salt and peppa</li>
<li>Whatever salad dressing options happened to be hiding in our fridge that night. (I think there were seven different bottles. Once again, we're ridiculous.) </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
All you need to do is wash and chop all of the ingredients, pick what you want to go in your monster salad, toss it with your dressing and enjoy! Oh, and poor yourself a glass of pinot grigio. That totally makes it taste better, I promise. We took our masterpieces out to the picnic table on our patio and had a wonderful family dinner full of deep conversation and uncontrollable giggles. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QyPMPlDyo_U/U9iBpxsBEqI/AAAAAAAAAdU/ysKViHAkiUg/s1600/salads.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QyPMPlDyo_U/U9iBpxsBEqI/AAAAAAAAAdU/ysKViHAkiUg/s1600/salads.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As usual, my dad and I turned it into a competition to see whose salad turned out best. Then we kept the competition rolling with ping pong, foosball, and a little basketball. Sometimes indecision can be fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My handle on Twitter and Instagram is @HairflipMeghan. This tends to be a little bit of a tipoff that I have big hair. Not crazy out-of-control big. Not even curly afro big. Just voluminous. I also have a tendency to play with my hair in public. I guess it's a bit of a nervous habit. I started doing it in the forth grade and have kept it up consistently since then: running my fingers through it, twisting it around my fingers, moving it from one shoulder to the other, etc. etc. <br />
<a name='more'></a>I love my hair. I also do very little to it besides the flipping and the fiddling. It's awfully hard to do a "Notice Me" hair toss worthy of shampoo commercial status when it's tightly pulled into a braid or bun. Because of this, I leave my hair down 90% of the time. (It's also possible that I do this because my styling skills are amateur, at best.)</div>

Lately, my saving grace hair-wise has been dry shampoo. I'm obsessed. It's basically this powder that comes in an aerosol can that you spray into your scalp. It absorbs excess oil so your hair looks fresher longer. As someone who tries to wash her hair as infrequently as I can get away with, dry shampoo is my absolute favorite and something I try to always have in my purse. Greasy hair is gross and regardless of where you actually ended up the night before, no one want to look like they woke up in a dumpster in Connecticut. Basically, dry shampoo is the most important thing I keep on my bathroom counter. However, a lot of dry shampoos are ridiculously expensive and when you use a product multiple times of day, you've kinda gotta make sure you can afford it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
Here are my favorites!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GCTPXkWvFt4/U9H_p1fEfvI/AAAAAAAAAaA/o3iwhCPvwxc/s1600/IMG_3348.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GCTPXkWvFt4/U9H_p1fEfvI/AAAAAAAAAaA/o3iwhCPvwxc/s1600/IMG_3348.jpg" /></a>1. Suave Professionals<br />
I purchase this in bulk. They sell it in almost any drug store and always have it in stock at Target. I love this one because it's so freaking cheap and works like a charm. Admittedly, You have to use quite a bit of it (which is also probably why I buy four or five bottles at a time.) However, when it costs under $3, you can't really get too upset. Plus, the scent is totally fantastic: unique but not overwhelming and vaguely citrus. This is definitely my go-to.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bPpXumhOlMI/U9H_ssjZK6I/AAAAAAAAAaQ/AZRjjCsoNs0/s1600/IMG_3354.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bPpXumhOlMI/U9H_ssjZK6I/AAAAAAAAAaQ/AZRjjCsoNs0/s1600/IMG_3354.jpg" /></a></div>
2. Another brand that does dry shampoo well is Dove.<br />
I am already a huge junkie for Dove products. I use their body wash, deodorant, and conditioner, so adding their dry shampoo into the mix was a natural choice. I feel like Dove always cranks out consistent quality and this is no exception. More expensive than the suave version, but each can lasts longer because you don't need nearly as much spray to absorb the same amount of oil. My only beef with this one is the smell. Its a little too "clean" for me and smells like baby powder. Not terribly sexy. However, scent preferences vary pretty drastically from person to person so I'm sure lots of people love the smell. I've also found that this leaves the most white residue which is a problem since my hair is fairly dark.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZvKVQAisJj8/U9H_qhkzn6I/AAAAAAAAAaI/Nu_zSmuWtxw/s1600/IMG_3351.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZvKVQAisJj8/U9H_qhkzn6I/AAAAAAAAAaI/Nu_zSmuWtxw/s1600/IMG_3351.jpg" /></a></div>
3. Just recently, I tried the "Not Your Mother's.." version and really like this one too. It goes on light and airy, and absorbs oils without adding too much heft or weight. Even the scent is miraculously absent. This one is a little bit more expensive and a little bit less exciting than the other two but is totally effective. I've only used it a couple times so far but I will definitely be trying this one again.<br />
<br />
<br />
A couple of bonus tips:<br />
<ul>
<li>For the most dramatic volume, shake your head upside down afterwards while rubbing the powder into your scalp with your hands. Don't brush through your hair with a comb afterwards like it says on the bottle because you will lose most of the bounce and end up with sad limp hair. Totally oil-free but still sad and limp. </li>
<li>Also, if you have dark hair like me, make sure to check for white residue before you leave the house. </li>
<li>Lastly, always wash your hands after rubbing the dry shampoo into your scalp. The powdery texture feels great in your hair but super weird when touching anything else. </li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>

Happy Hairflipping! </div>

Essentially it's a 5K on steroids where you climb walls, crawl under pipes, race down Slip 'n Slides, and do all sorts of other fun stuff. I've been trying not to sit on my ass in front of a computer all summer and this is was a great way to get down and dirty with a bunch of friends and family.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>This Particular mud run was hosted at Straddleline ORV park in McCleary. A bunch of our friends and neighbors from Hood Canal were doing the run as well and we all formed a team to compete together. We had a lot of fun with it, dressing up in lace and boas to go with our team name, "Soiled and Spoiled." All of us helped each other through the obstacles and had an absolute blast. It was a great workout and a fantastic mini adventure. One of my favorite days of the summer so far.<br />

From funky giraffes to psychedelics to neon art, it's been a fun and vibrant week in the life of Meghan Gallagher. I am trying new things, seeing old friends, making plans for the future, and exploring all of the possibilities! And it feels so good to be alive.<br />

<a href="http://society6.com/product/giraffe-5h5_print#1=45">Top Left:</a> Adorable giraffe poster from society 6. I'm getting more and more obsessed with this website. The artists are so talented and the prints are relatable and decidedly unpretentious. It's refreshing.<br />

Middle Left: A photo I took while down at North Beach. Watching the sunset and splitting a bottle of wine. That's what I call an unbeatable summer night.<br />

<a href="http://blog.patternbank.com/amy-sia-designer-spotlight/">Bottom Left:</a> Another Amy Sia photo. So excited about her prints. I'm a sucker for anything kaleidoscope patterned and this one is psychedelic.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jjRDSWX8xto/U8oNMgBidDI/AAAAAAAAAZM/A_qCBPlEG1w/s1600/dresses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jjRDSWX8xto/U8oNMgBidDI/AAAAAAAAAZM/A_qCBPlEG1w/s1600/dresses.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been thinking a lot this summer about the intersectionality of childhood and adulthood. This is my last summer of childhood and it's like I can't decide whether or not I'm a grown up yet. One day I'll be in my pjs watching reality television and eating Nutella of of the jar, and the next I am running around town like a superwoman soccer mom completing errands left and right. How is it that we can be both at once?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every once in a while an event or even just a moment comes along to remind me that I am at <i>that</i> age. The age when life plans get made, when careers get started, and yes, when my friends start getting married.<br />
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a>Today I went wedding dress shopping with one of my best and oldest friends who got engaged last month. Engaged to be married. Married! It feels like just yesterday we were running around my basement playing make believe. (Although one might argue that planning a wedding is quite similar to playing make believe. At least at the dress fitting, it felt like playing with bridal barbie.) I am a particularly visual person so seeing her walk out of the dressing room in a white veil and gown really hit me like a ton of bricks. She is the first of my friends to be going through this process and it is forcing me to really look at our futures. As I watched her try on gowns, I was unable to ignore the fact that she is a full blown real life adult now. Which by extension means that I should be one too..?<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am living in limbo for the moment; postponing the big decisions of my life. However, I know that this really is my last summer of childhood. I'm moving slowly but surely away from that part of my life and am moving towards the next adventure. It's exciting and terrifying. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I am definitely not a morning person. And not just in the
lazy teenager way, but in the full-blown, “you have a problem,” way. If it’s
happening before 10am, then I’m probably not going to show up. If nothing is
happening, then I’m probably not going to leave my bed until late afternoon. I’ve
been this way since as long as I can remember. I’ve tried to fight it over the
years and have had varying degrees of success. However, whenever I’m am left to
my own schedule, my body instinctively reverts to this shifted schedule. I
don’t think I will ever be a morning person. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
To help balance out this
biological inability to function before noon, it seems that my body has adopted
a particular affinity for late nights. If the stars are out, then chances are
so am I. I thrive on the intensity and tranquility. I thrive on knowing that
everyone else is asleep and find security in the knowledge that no one will
disturb my razor sharp focus. Everything is clearer at night, under the light
of the moon. Complex problems have clear solutions, thoughts transform
effortlessly into ink on paper, and the white noise of everyday chaos ceases. It’s
just me and my thoughts wandering around at this hour: no noise, no schedules,
no distractions. This is the atmosphere that kick starts my productivity like
no other. Interaction is such a huge part of our daily lives, but there is
something special about solitude. Some of the most incredible moments I’ve ever
had have been those in which I was completely alone. Those who have ever
wandered the sidewalks of their neighborhood at four in the morning and has
seen the world at its quietest knows how magical it can be. Those who haven’t experienced
this should try it some time. Sometimes being alone with your thoughts is the
best way to develop them into something meaningful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all
for team work and collaboration, however being completely isolated amongst a
vast night sky is inspiring in a way no study group can be. <o:p></o:p></div>

So this is where I find myself tonight. Contently isolated
from the rest of the sleeping world. Legs restless, eyes wide open, and
contemplating the questions we don’t usually take the time to ponder amongst
the chaos of regularly scheduled days. This time, this witching hour, this sharpened
solitude, this midnight moment, is mine. I wouldn’t have it any other way. <o:p></o:p></div>

<a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/359795457701696674/">Top Left:</a> Have you ever searched Pinterest for "Mint Wedding?" It's incredible. These flag decorations are such a beautiful color and oh-so-chic. </div>

I love that they are close-toed so i never have to worry about the state of my pedicure. Plus, they look just as cute with socks as without so I'll be able to transition them into Fall pretty easily. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So summer is in full swing here and while I've been in vacation mode for quite some time, it seems that the Seattle weather has finally got the memo. It has been HOT and even as a California girl, I have been sweating and panting with the rest of the city. I've been in desperate need of something to keep me cool. </div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For me, it's all about that iced green tea because I can drink it by the bucket load without feeling guilty and without getting the shakes from over caffeination. It's way healthier than downing gallons of diet coke and is supposedly good for your skin (according to various people on the internet and in magazines,) so thats a bonus. Iced green tea is my go-to order at Starbucks when I stop by to shamelessly bum their internet. Lately, however, I have been brewing it up at home which is working even better because its so freaking easy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I brew the tea hot in a big glass jug with about 4 tea bags for two hours. brewing it hot makes the tea steep better and faster. Plus, I can sweeten the tea with a couple spoonfuls of honey while its still warm enough to dissipate. When you purchase an iced tea at a coffee shop, sweetening with honey isn't really an option. I leave the jug in a sunny corner of the counter and let it steep for a couple hours at least because I like it nice and strong. You can always water it down a little later, and should keep in mind that once you add the ice, the tea will get a little watered down on its own. Then you just pop the whole jar in the fridge and save it for later. A jug will typically last me about a week, depending on the weather. It is so nice to always have a cool glass of iced tea close by and ready, especially one that is brewed and sweetened exactly how I like it. I guess, I'm a bit of a perfectionist that way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Note: This drink is best enjoyed in a cozy lawn chair on a sunny patio.</div>
<br />

I've been feeling totally inspired lately, which is a little bit surprising considering my days have been pretty monotonous. It's hard to gage progress and accomplishment during the summer because I don't have many concrete tasks or obligations. I am living in vacation limbo. Hence, I have been deeming everyday that I discover something new or get inspired by something unexpected a success. It's been fun!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-84703622665619948792014-06-22T02:31:00.000-07:002014-07-17T02:31:51.030-07:00Dinner for One: Kale Salad<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RHjK-4lN5Lo/U8eXdnOpGXI/AAAAAAAAAYY/Cal5ZBSv6JQ/s1600/IMG_2693.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RHjK-4lN5Lo/U8eXdnOpGXI/AAAAAAAAAYY/Cal5ZBSv6JQ/s1600/IMG_2693.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Part of acting like an adult is eating like an adult so I have been trying to put on my big girl apron and do work in the kitchen. I am never going to be Martha Stewart but I also recognize that you can't eat nachos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (at least not without a significant degree of judgement from friends and family.) I've been making a real conscious effort lately to cook a couple of "Grown up" meals instead. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nothing says "responsible adult" like the trendiest of superfoods: kale. Plus, salads are totally healthy in their own right. I am trying to be healthy but not boring and, for me, making a salad exciting is a little bit of a challenge. I like to add lots of extra fun goodies like cheese and nuts to add some fun factor. This particular salad was thrown together from whatever we happened to have in our fridge, (a recurring theme in my culinary adventures.) I used:</div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Kale</li>
<li>Diced avocado</li>
<li>Fresh strawberries</li>
<li>Chunks of mozzarella cheese</li>
<li>Shelled pistachios nuts</li>
<li>Cilantro lime dressing from Trader Joes</li>
</ul>
<div>
Then I just had to toss it all in a bowl, mix it together and dig in. So simple while still being interesting and delicious. Eating like an adult can be fun. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwo7R0Gc_lk/U8eXvycEDuI/AAAAAAAAAYg/fDJVLiviNzc/s1600/IMG_2697.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwo7R0Gc_lk/U8eXvycEDuI/AAAAAAAAAYg/fDJVLiviNzc/s1600/IMG_2697.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
Another thing about cooking like an adult is cleaning up after yourself and doing the dishes. Maybe, I'll start working on that one next!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-3085389033544051752014-06-20T14:32:00.000-07:002014-07-19T02:40:29.493-07:00Life's A Beach<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VKZTHDx0vjE/U8eb-CUZjRI/AAAAAAAAAYs/5RDGTwIBDNM/s1600/IMG_3110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VKZTHDx0vjE/U8eb-CUZjRI/AAAAAAAAAYs/5RDGTwIBDNM/s1600/IMG_3110.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I just wanted to take a minute to stop and be grateful for everything I have. It is so easy to look at what other people are achieving and get caught up in the comparison game. Especially as a product of the "Facebook Generation," I view everything in terms of how others will perceive it. I get sucked into a vortex of Instagram filters and retweets. Don't get me wrong, social media is fantastic. It's just not always real. You can perform whatever identity you want through various platforms and profiles. You can show the world exactly who you want to be. However, that can sometimes distract from what is in the now. Where you are now. What you have now. Who you are now.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
None of these thoughts are revolutionary. In fact, many other people have pointed this same concept out much more eloquently than I am doing here. But bear with me because I need a little reminder. I just need a minute to breathe and to be. I might not have everything figured out just yet, but I have a whole awful lot more than a lot of other people and I want to be someone who focuses on the positives. I might not have a five year plan, but the sun is shining and the beach is calling. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And, for now, that's enough. </div>

<span style="color: black;">I am all about limes. Whether they’re in gin and tonics,
margaritas, mojitos, or just squeezed into my ice water at restaurants, I love
that sharp citrus flavor. It just tastes like summer to me. And who doesn’t
love summer?! </span></div>
<a name='more'></a>This year the West Coast had a little bit of a lime shortage and
it was absolutely devastating to my cocktail plans. I was thrilled to see them
reappearing on grocery store selves and have definitely been making up for lost
time. In addition to all of the G&Ts and blended margs I’ve been mixing up
this summer, I’ve been mixing up a lot of regular old Limeade as well. It’s a
throwback childhood classic and gets me cooled off without getting me tipsy. I
make mine one glass at a time because it’s usually just me drinking it. Plus,
making a whole pitcher at a time feels a little daunting (and a little messy.)
I much prefer my super simple combo. One glass. One lime. And a whole lot of
zesty citrus freshness.<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br />
<span style="color: black;"></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6AQII98Zbmo/U8GM1_w9_zI/AAAAAAAAAXM/UZ0pH5Ybogs/s1600/IMG_3182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6AQII98Zbmo/U8GM1_w9_zI/AAAAAAAAAXM/UZ0pH5Ybogs/s1600/IMG_3182.jpg" /></a></div>
<o:p></o:p><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
First, fill up a short glass with crushed ice and filtered water.
You don’t want to fill the glass too full, or else it will be hard to stir once
you add the lime and sugar.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
Cut a large lime in half and then squeeze each half into the
glass. You’ll want to really press hard on those suckers so you get as much
juice as possible and get the best lime/sugar/water ratio possible. Also, if
you want to garnish the drink with a lime circle like I did then make sure to
cut it and set it aside before any squeezing happens. (duh.)<br />
<br />
Empty in one packet of Stevia or any other artificial sweetener you like. You can use real sugar too! This is just what we happened to have in our kitchen this week.<br />
<br />
Stir it all together, add a little more ice to the top if some of
yours has melted, attach the lime to the rim, and then take that baby outside
for a quick summertime study break!<br />

Life is full of little bits of inspiration. In fact, the internet is full to bursting with cool and inspiring things and lately I've started to pay more attention to them. <br />
<a name='more'></a>I think collecting visual inspiration will be a good way to keep my creativity flowing, even though I'm not currently creating a whole lot. I'm exploring a whole new side of the internet where bloggers, artists, designers, and tastemakers collaborate. </div>

I've heard a lot of horror stories about college dining hall food. From gaining the freshman 15 to not having any variety of options, it seems that the general consensus states that college dining sucks. Luckily, I go to the best college ever and have the absolute best food. It's Awesome. I'm spoiled. However, that also means I have no idea how to feed myself in the real world. I have a couple of easy and (moderately) healthy go-tos that are satisfying and pretty easy to make (and clean up.)<br />

I tend to go for easy snack-able meals that don't require too much fuss and can be eaten in front of the TV, and these crostini are a great option. The instructions are simple: toast some french bread and then top them off with whatever combinations you have in the fridge. The cream cheese and avocado combo is one of my favorites and gets a lot of play because its so simple, while still feeling a teensy bit gourmet. The other combo I tried today is chèvre and tapenade, mostly because I've been on an olive kick lately. The goat cheese and olives both have a bit of a sharpness to them that goes really well together. So there you have it. A light and easy meal with a little bit of crunch.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BFMlN1XV9AQ/U5bCoXPgzLI/AAAAAAAAARY/fBMjoYB-J6E/s1600/IMG_2757.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BFMlN1XV9AQ/U5bCoXPgzLI/AAAAAAAAARY/fBMjoYB-J6E/s1600/IMG_2757.jpg" /></a><br />
Life gets kind of hard sometimes. I'm not trying to be cynical or angsty or anything, it's just the truth. Schedules get crammed with appointments and obligations often take priority over adventures. That is just the way the world works. It is part of being a responsible and fully functioning adult (which I have been trying to do lately.) However, the wisest people I've met understand the importance of fun. Fun is a healthy and totally necessary part of life. Taking time for yourself to relax is just as important as paying your credit card bills and buying groceries. It might be more important. Feeding the soul as well as the body, and all that...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">Anyways. It's important to have little escapes every once in a while and this past winter, my parents invested in a semi-permanent escape. They bought a beach cabin on Hood Canal about an hour and a half out of the city and it is honestly the best thing that has happened to our family in a while. A cute little two-bedroom on the South shore with a wood burning fireplace, a lush green lawn, and a party-perfect patio.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">Beaches in the Pacific Northwest are way different than the ones in Southern California. For one thing, they aren't as warm. The mornings here tend to be overcast, but the afternoons are the perfect temperature. The beaches are covered in rocks and shells instead of sand, and change dramatically with the tides. I've been adventuring and investigating the sea life and am so far pretty impressed. There are starfish, mussels, tiny fish, clams, crabs, and tons of oysters. You can literally pick an oyster up off the beach and shuck it and eat it right then and there. It's incredible.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uAFqWRYYsfg/U5bCwVuifiI/AAAAAAAAARg/-jKI5XWDZMQ/s1600/IMG_2820.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uAFqWRYYsfg/U5bCwVuifiI/AAAAAAAAARg/-jKI5XWDZMQ/s1600/IMG_2820.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is so easy to be happy here, especially because my parents already seem so relaxed and at home. I am having so much fun watching them settle in and am loving how this new purchase is encouraging them to escape the city more often. I think that it is way too easy to get stuck in a routine and sometimes it takes a big dose of spontaneity and faith in order to rediscover the fun. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Plus, it doesn't hurt that the fridge is always well-stocked and there is an adorable nail salon just a couple minutes away!)</div>

<br />
<br />
Anyone who knows me knows that I love telling secrets and playing games. In fact, one of the most feared Meghanisms among my friend group is "Let's play a fun game!" Recently, I have been bullying my friends into playing a new game with me. It's called "If My Life were a Pinterest Page..."<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The premise is simple but the possibilities are endless. Essentially, you imagine where your life will be 5-10 years down the road but through rose-colored glasses. (Pinterest-colored glasses?) You don't think about crippling student loan debt or having to uproot your life and move across the country for your finance's new job. Instead you focus only on the frilly little details, like how you are going to design your first apartment so it looks like something out of a Crate and Barrel catalog, or how you will throw sophisticated yet raunchy dinner parties for all of your chic urban twenty something friends. Questions about budget or functionality are strictly against the rules and if you interrupt the fantasy with something practical, then you lose the game.<br />
<br />
As college Seniors, we are at a pretty miraculous age. Our lives are mostly fantasy and possibility and the world is our oyster. We are just close enough to adulthood to be able to get extremely invested, however not close enough to fully understand the challenges that accompany the glamor. I spend an obscene amount of time worrying about my future and I spend even more time idealizing it, creating a glossy and perfectly curated version of my life. Now that I think about it, this game is a lot like lifestyle blogging. Scrape away all of the day-to-day drudge and worry, pick out only the prettiest details of your life, add a couple of filters and a caption then bam, you've got a blog entry. However, this is not the way the world works. <br />
<br />
Sure, you can buy furniture and throw dinner parties, but that will not be what occupies the majority of your time. Unless, of course you are lucky enough to be a professional lifestyle blogger, in which case I want your life. Even then those perfect posts are only a snapshot, a fragment. They aren't real. They are, however, really fun to look at. So I am going to keep reading about the beautiful lives of these beautiful women and I am going to keep playing my little game of possibilities because I am at the age where I can. We twenty somethings have the great privilege of being in a state of transition. As we are now, we are close enough to feel the heat but not close enough to get burned. It's a precarious position, but also a pretty magical one. Who wouldn't want to escape for a minute into a world that's all possibility and no practicality?<br />
<br />
I love my new game and I will continue to play it without guilt and without worry. Never, however, at the expense of reality. I will keep my head in the clouds, but make sure that my feet stay firmly planted on the ground. At my age, that's all anyone can ask of me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-24294547848244397122014-06-02T22:02:00.000-07:002014-07-12T12:39:22.408-07:00Mini Vacation: Hood Canal<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If a picture's worth a thousand words, then this little visual compilation should be more than enough to convey how much fun I had this weekend at my parents' beach cabin. From shucking and eating oysters straight off the beach to drinking wine on the porch at sunset, I had an absolutely unbeatable time and can't wait to go back for more sun and fun.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02650270816358475349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292966174532749930.post-71377464072452948742014-05-28T19:32:00.002-07:002014-06-10T18:17:57.536-07:00Green Glory<div class="MsoNormal">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love going to school in Southern California. I love the
warm weather and eternal sunshine. I love the laid-back attitudes and casual
cool of the people there. I would have loved to live out my fantasy of spending
a SoCal summer chilling by the pool and soaking up the vitamin D. That was the
plan and my overactive imagination had idealized it to the point of
ridiculousness. Admittedly, I probably spent a little too much time fantasizing. As the summer drew closer, I realized I was going to have to trade in that California dream for one
last Seattle summer, which is honestly a pretty great trade off.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that I’m
back in the Northwest, I appreciate how good it is to be home and am becoming
more and more aware of the ways in which California just can’t compete. I
hadn’t fully realized what I was missing in LA and am frankly really happy to be home. Lately I've been thinking about
one major thing that you can’t find in the California desert: GREEN!<br />
<br />
There’s a reason they call it the
Emerald City and there is a reason Washington is the Evergreen State. Since I’ve
been home, I am continually being shocked and amazed by the vibrancy and
vitality of the wildlife here. Things <i>grow</i>
here. I had forgotten how beautiful and incredible that process could be. The
wildlife thrives here and runs wild if you let it. Even in the middle of a
city, the green is everywhere; peeking out of cracks in the sidewalk and
curling around fenceposts. It's as if the surrounding nature is always sneaking in to the urban everyday, reminding us of the vast landscape waiting just beyond the city limits. It’s humbling and inspiring and is one huge reason why I’m
happy to be home. I love California, but I missed the green.<br />
